Building a Community :
Building an organization that supports recreation requires integrating our efforts into the broader community. We've taught disc golf at Girl's Sports Day, set up courses for the Community Campout and led night hikes to the Chico Observatory. When recreation was threatened we worked within the system to promote a pro-recreation message. And when the City Council voted to remove a historic recreation from our park we took that message to the community via the referendum process.

You'll find the Outsiders at community events, like the Pastels in the Plaza. And you'll find us organizing volunteers to remove invasive plants or spreading mulch on worn areas. We're working with property owners to identify recreation components for projects that may be developed. We've hosted free tournaments for disc golf and built what may be the only disc golf course in the world for kids.

The more people that join the Outsiders the more work we can get done. So please consider joining today.
Salvation Donation - November 2011
In November a member of the Chico Outsiders made a large donation to our non-profit. The donor wished to remain anonymous and asked that the Outsiders use the funds to support the needy this holiday season. To honor that request President Todd Cathers made a $2,000 donation to the Salvation Army. The donation will provide as many as 450 Thanksgiving meals to Chico residents in need. This is a testiment to the great community members that make up the Chico Outsiders. (Image: Captain Darren Stratton receiving the donation from President Todd Cathers)
A Little Recognition - July 2011
Jake Preston, the facilities manager for the Chico Area Recreation and Park District, presents Resolution 11-07 to Gregg Payne on behalf of Chico Outsiders on July 22. The Chico Area Recreation District's board of directors honored the Chico Outsiders for their dedication to providing quality recreation opportunities in the form of disc golf to the community.
Second Annual Awesome Blossom Toss'em
On May 14th 2011 The Outsiders and the Chico Area Recreation and Park District (CARD) held the 2nd Annual Awesome Blossom Toss'em kids' disc golf tournament. We gave a free golf disc with a custom stamp to 59 kids (16 and under), and another 19 discs to their parents. 19 of the participants were female, and 14 were under the age of 8.

CARD provided the custom discs and other support efforts. The Chico Outsiders organized the tournament and engaged in public relations efforts which included newspaper, television, radio, and social media outlets. We also provided trophies, prizes and graphic design for the custom stamp and advertisements. Innova disc golf products provided another $150 in support and prizes.

After discs were distributed a scored 9-hole tournament was held for the children who wished to participate. Children under 8 years old were not scored, but were allowed to participate is a separate group. The youngest participant who registered was 4 years old.

The purpose of this event was to introduce/encourage parents and children to play disc golf together. The Sherwood Forest course, which was a joint effort between the Chico Outsiders and CARD is a perfect venue for this activity. The 9-hole disc golf course is named Sherwood Forest because the Adverntures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn was filmed at this location.

On behalf of the families and children that benefited from this free disc golf experience The Outsiders would like to thanks CARD and Innova for their support of disc golf in our community.

Peregrine Point Becomes Official
Press Release (11/30/10):
On Monday November 29th, the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission officially named the highway 32 disc golf area.  The 40 acre site was purchased from the Bureau of Land Management in 1994-5, along with 1300 acres of private property, and has been the topic of much community discussion.    This is the first component of the 1994-5 expansion of Bidwell Park to receive a formal name.

The BLM property was more formally added to Bidwell Park in 2008 with the completion of the Bidwell Park Master Management Plan update.  Since that time the pre-existing recreation of disc golf has been modified and realigned to avoid environmentally sensitive areas.  The newly aligned recreation component is expected to open to the public soon.

The commission named the site the Peregrine Point Trailhead and Disc Golf Facility.   The site is named after the Peregrine falcons that can be seen hunting among tree tops in Bidwell Park’s Iron Canyon, below the cliff top locale.  The name was originally suggested by the Chico Outsiders who are building the disc golf facilities.  “The intricate and skilled flight of the falcon is something we wish we could emulate with our golf discs, and the Peregrine is an appropriate symbol for this lofty park perch” said Lon Glazner, president of the Chico Outsiders.

Peregrine Point tee-shirts and golf disc supporting the new disc golf facility may be purchased at our donate page, or by contacting Lon.
Birdies For Everyone
Press Release (11/21/10):
On Friday, November 19th, the Chico Outsiders, a disc golf group, purchased approximately 450 turkey dinners for Chico’s Salvation Army.  The turkeys will be part of the Salvation Army’s Thanksgiving meal service.  The donation is valued at $1,000.

“We understand that these are trying times for many people in our community.  Upon receipt of a sizeable donation we felt a moral obligation to dedicate funds to our town’s most needy persons.”  Said the group’s President, Lon Glazner.  “Purchasing all of the turkeys for the Salvation Army allows them to concentrate on meeting the many other needs of their clients.   We’d like to challenge the rest of the community to step forward and support local organizations in need of holiday help.”

The Chico Outsiders are currently working with the City of Chico to build the highway 32 disc golf facilities.   They are a California 501(c)3 incorporated as Outside Recreation Advocacy, Inc.  More information on the group can be found at www.chico-outsiders.com
Chico Outsiders Become Innova Distributor

The Outsiders have been approved as a retailer of Innova products.  We'll be purchasing additional discs to add to our line of custom stamps, and once per month (and at tournaments) we have permission to sell items at Peregrine Point.  We'll try to carry items not available at local vendors to avoid competing with these businesses.

When Peregrine Point opens we'll begin holding monthly games at 9AM on second Saturday of each month.  Items supporting the course will be for sale on these days.

Referendum to restore disc golf
Prior to the formation of a non-profit, in November of 2008, the Outsiders organized a referendum drive to convince our city council to return disc golf to Bidwell Park. This was a significant community effort. 177 signature gatherers worked for 4 weeks to gather signatures. 80% of signatures were gathered in a 3 week period. The time frame included Thanksgiving break, so many workers gave up family time to this effort.  Gatherers were all ages, gender, and ideological backgrounds.

The referendum effort had 4 weeks to gather 4700 signatures from registered Chico voters. It was turned in to the City Clerk's office, and certified by the County Clerk's office. Both offices said it was the best organized referendum they had ever experienced. On January 6th 2009 the City Council restored disc golf to Bidwell Park.

Total signatures gathered – 8,655. After removing non-city voters – 6,158 (~97% valid after county certification)
Signature party affiliation (registered Chico voters only)
-    Democrat 2246 – 40%
-    Republican 2212 – 36%
-    Decline to state 1138 – 18%
-    Other (AI, GRN, LIB) 362 – 6%
