Comings and Goings

June and July are turning out to be pretty busy for the Outsiders.  We had the second annual Summer Solstice Slam last weekend (where we played/camped at Toney's Mountain Golf and then played Penn Valley). We also have the Safari Golf kid's backpacking trip scheduled for the end of July.  These are both member events.

In June we led a night hike to the Chico Observatory for CARD's community camput. This month we'll be hosting a free disc golf tournament at Lava Creek in Paradise.  On the same day as the Lava Creek event the Outsiders will be running the concession stand at CARD's popular "Movies in the Park".

You can see pictures of some of these activities at our web site.

In addition to all of this activity we have ongoing meetings with city officials to discuss management of the highway 32 disc golf course, and we are beginning to work on our end of the course construction implementation plan.

Please consider getting involved.  Our membership policy can be seen at this web page.

Upcoming Events

Lava Creek Free For All - July 18th
10AM tee-time Lava Creek Golf Course
Players meeting at 9:30AM

Come play disc golf amongst the rolling hills and towering oaks of Lava Creek in Paradise (about 20 minutes from Chico).  This 18-hole disc golf course comes complete with water hazards and dramatic elevation changes.   The Chico Outsiders will pay the greens fee for the first 60 disc golfers that register online at www.chico-outsiders.com.

Play a round of disc golf on one of the most scenic courses in Northern California. There will be a disc raffle and the tournament winner will earn an annual membership in the Chico Outsiders.

Lava Creek is a traditional ball golf course.  Disc golfers need to practice appropriate behaviour when playing there.  Keep the noise down.  Players must wear shirts and shoes at all times.  Outside alcoholic beverages are prohibited.  However, beer, other beverages, and snacks may be purchased from the shop at Lava Creek.

Here's a map to the Lave Creek course.

CARD's Movies In The Park - July 18th
What:  Watch a movie outdoor at night in Bidwell Park.  Babe is showing.  See CARD's web page here
Where:  Sycamore softball field at 1-mile in Bidwell Park
When: Movie starts after dark (typically 9:30PM) -

The Outsiders will be operating the concession stand.  Buy licorice ropes and popsicles and support disc golf.  This is a great family activity.  Bring blankets or chairs and enjoy the show.

Safari Golf Backpacking Trip (Member Event) - July 24th-27th
Backpacking and safari disc golf in the Trinity Alps (play object course). The backpacking trip is a short 2 mile hike to a mountain lake, camping, and safari golf. This event is specifically to introduce young kids to backpacking and safari golf. Since a lake is nearby only children who are capable swimmers should be brought along.  We may shorten this trip to allow people to who can only take a single day off work to make it.

Highway 32 Course Design (Member Event) - Month of July
This is not really an event so much as a project.  The Outsiders are working with the City of Chico on a grant application.  We're also developing a construction plan for the highway 32 disc golf courses.  Some of the preliminary work will be done this month.  If you'd like to help out with course layout, component selection, and construction planning please email Lon (lon@chico-outsiders.com).

Hole Sponsors
We're looking for hole sponsors for the highway 32 disc golf course.  A hole sponsorship is $500 and will be used to purchase the basket for a hole. Additional fundraising events will be used to pay for the construction and other requirements of the highway 32 disc golf course.

We like to thank our first hole sponsor for the highway 32 disc golf course, Lotus Landscaping.  Thanks Preston, for supporting disc golf and recreation in our park system.

Summer Solstice Slam 2009 -

Congratulations to Gregg who won the hard fought Summer Solstice Slam 2009 and took home the revolving trophy(see here).  The planned 2 rounds at Toney's Mountain Golf were converted to 1 round of golf, a round of beer at the camp site, and some swimming in the concrete pond.

The first round at Toney's took 5 hours, and trees consumed 4 or 5 discs.  Two were left hanging in the same pine tree about 100' off the ground.  We came out of the "bowl" holes looking like war refugees.

The second official round at Penn Valley's Hanging Oak Disc Golf Course was much more reasonable.  That's an excellent course maintained by Skycatz Disc Golf Club.

David and Lon tied for 2nd place, and Preston took the coveted DFL trophy.  Now it's time to start planning the Winter Solstice Slam.

Media Matters
The summer issue of DiscGolfer magazine has an article on the Outsiders, and Chico's disc golf happenings.  We asked Joe Fiedt, the author, if we could share the article with newsletter readers and he sent me a copy.

Here's a pdf file of the article from Discgolfer magazine.

Copies of the magazine DiscGolfer may be purchased at the Professional Disc Golf Association web site.  Here's a quick link to the page.
