What's Up

Last month we held the Lava Creek Free For All, up in Paradise.  60 disc golfers showed up and played a round.  Mark Bohn Jr. won the tourney shooting -6.  You can see the Copper Tone Pole trophy, player's scores, and a photo of Mark Jr. at www.chico-outsiders.com. Special thanks go out to Dominick who put the course together, and the owners of Lava Creek Ana and Tony.

The Outsiders also held two member events, a safari disc golf / backpacking trip to the Trinity Alps.  This was to intrduce kids to backpacking.  We also explored an area south of Chico that has been proposed as a 400 acre regional park.  We're providing feeback on the trail system for the property owner.

The Outsiders have also been working with the City to come up with an implementation guide for the highway 32 disc golf construction process.  You can see an example of the long course hole 1 guide document here.

The Outsiders are still looking for new members so
please consider getting involved.  Our membership policy can be seen at this web page.

Upcoming Events

Equestrian Access to Proposed Park Site - August 15th
The Outsiders will be providing access to the proposed 400 acre regional park site to equestrians for feedback on the trail system that has been defined.

September Annual Meeting
As stipulated by our bylaws, the Outsiders will hold our annual membership meeting on the third Saturday of September (the 19th).

Hole Sponsors
On July 16th the Federal Government (IRS) recognized Outside Recreation Advocacy, Inc. as a tax exempt California public charity.  This ensures that any donations to the Outsiders are tax deductible contributions.  In particular the IRS recognition verifies that donations greater than $250 are tax exempt.

We're looking for hole sponsors for the highway 32 disc golf course.  A hole sponsorship is $500 and will be used to purchase the basket for a hole. Additional fundraising events will be used to pay for the construction and other requirements of the highway 32 disc golf course.

So far we've got two sponsors, the unrelated Preston Smith and Matt Smith.  We really need to thank these gentleman for stepping up early and donating to the cause.

Taken For Grant Ed

The city of Chico had located a possible state grant (proposition 84) to fund the disc golf trailhead improvements.

The Outsiders, CARD, and the city of Chico have met twice to work on a grant application, and the effort seemed like it would score high based on the grant application guidelines.

Unfortunately, as the city began to use the software provided to submit the application, it became apparent that the grant was directed toward urban park improvements.  Since the 32 site is not close to dense housing areas the city decided not to submit the application for these funds.

So parking/tail improvements for the 32 site remain unfunded.  It's hoped that some other funding mechanism can be found.  In the mean-time, it's still up to disc golfers to cover the cost of targets and mitigation measures for the disc golf course areas.
Rain Check -

At the Park Commission meeting on July 27th the upcoming wet weather policy for the 32 disc golf site was considered.

It is expected that the disc golf site will continue to be closed for use during wet weather.  The city is looking into using moisture sensors to take the guesswork out of how long the site should be closed after the rain ends.

However, should a policy that works fail to materialize, at least one Park Commissioner suggested removing the disc golf courses for the winter.
