Forward
We've missed a couple of newsletters
(November and December to be exact). Instead of
writing newsletters we completed a restoration
project and continued the negotiations with the city on
a contract to manage the highway 32 site. We've entered a
partnership with CARD to improve the Sherwood Forest
course and hold events there. And Klean
Kanteen has joined as our newest hole sponsor for this
project.
Probably the biggest news is that the
Park Commission has recommended to the City Council that
$52,000 be applied to improve the long course. The city spent
$600,000 on the master plan which included the disc golf
site. So
spending less than 1/10 of that to support recreation
and improve the environment seems like a no-brainer.
The $52,000 was not allocated for
any other use, and is state grant money
(no impact to the city's fiscal position). The fact that
this project is also backed by a county certified
referendum should seal the deal (15% of registered city
voters signed in less than 30 days).
The council
will meet on Tuesday to make a decision. We'd like for
you to be there.
More information is below.

The
Proposition
During
negotiations with the Park Commission the Outsiders'
board of directors made a proposal for financial support
from the city.
We
proposed to remove the short course for at least two
years while the Park Commission sought to relocate
it. In
return we asked that the city install 18 disc golf
targets in groups of 3-6 in local parks, and fund the
improvements to the long course.
The
funding would come from un-allocated money from a state
grant the city has received. The funds were to be used
on a bridge project in Upper Park that was
cancelled.
If not spent by March 2011 the funds would have
been lost.
Earlier this month the Park Commission
approved the use of these funds, and on Tuesday the City Council
will consider applying the money to the disc golf
project (1-19-10, 6:30PM City Council
Chambers).
We'd like for members and interested
individuals to attend the meeting. If you can't
make the meeting please email your support for the
allocation of these funds to the City Council (email
link). |

The Awsome Blossom
Toss'em The
Outsiders have partnered with the Chico Area Recreation
and Park District (CARD) to make improvements to the
Sherwood Forest course. The improvements
will be made through the spring months. The effort will
culminate in a tournament for kids 14 and under in
May. At the
first annual Awesome Blossom Toss'em event 100 custom
stamped discs will be given out to participants. There is no cost
for this event.
Improvements include half-sized
concrete tee pads, steps near the target of hole 1, a
new Robin Hood themed obstacle at hole 8, and a native
tree planting experiment between holes 7 and 9. We'll also
help direct other volunteer groups that may be
interested in contributing labor.
We need
volunteers, specifically those with concrete forming and
finishing experience. A work schedule
will be posted at our web site. Please help
out. |

We're happy to announce that Klean
Kanteen has become a sponsor of Project 32 by donating
custom logoed 27oz bottles. The bottles
carry the Outsiders logo and a message to support disc
golf in Bidwell Park (see bottles
here).
We're selling the Kanteens at $10 for members and
$15 for non-members. All proceeds
will be applied to the construction of disc golf in
Bidwell Park.
We expect to have these products offered online
with a week or so.
You can also purchase them from Lon at his office
downtown (lon@chico-outsiders.com).
These
other great companies and individuals have also become
hole sponsors. Lotus Landscaping, Preston Smith

Shasta Series
The Outsiders are sponsoring the Chico
Challenge for the Shasta Series. This year it
will be held at Community Park on February
6th (rain or shine). The Shasta
Series has its own set of rules, sign up requirements,
and payout formula. We'll try to
provide more information on the Shasta Series at our web
site on the "events" page.

Slammertime
This year's Winter Solstice Slam went off
without a hitch.
Todd won the coveted Hulk Trophy once again,
which is an indicator that everyone else that played is
not very good.
We played disc golf courses in Horsetown and
Anderson.
Both are within 2 hours of Chico. The Horsetown
course is unimproved like Upper Bidwell Park's course,
but really a fun place to play.
For this year's
Summer Solstice Slam we're planning on camping at Hendy
Woods and playing the disc golf course at Anderson
Valley Brewing Company. The date hasn't
been set, but members are welcome to
come.

Join The
Outsiders
In order to keep the highway
32 disc golf site open for play the Outsiders must
pay for monitoring studies, maintenance, and
insurance. We need a membership base of 100 people
to make this happen.
For about $4 per month
you can keep disc golf alive in Bidwell Park
by joining the Outsiders. Membership is $50
per year. You can pay in a lump sum, or pay
$10 every other month for 10 months.
